Frequently Asked Questions
Room temparature tap water is abolutely perfect for your microgreens, no need for filtering. There are however some things to consider:
- Very cold or very hot water can shock your plants, affecting their growth. Room temperature water is best.
- Avoid softened water, it can slow the growth of your plants. The Calcium and Mgansium in harder water is actually beneficial to your microgreens.
- Highly chlorinated water will have a negtaive impact on the growth of your microgreens, their appearance and taste.
GRO TIP: An easy and natural way to dechlorinate water (and bring it to room temperature) is to fill the watering container and leave it to sit for a day, uncovered. This will allow the chlorine to evaporate.
We use a simple set of variables to determine the difficulty of growing:
- Is seed preparation required?
- Are there any specialized processes involved?
- Does it need a little extra dilligence during the growing period?
- How long does it take to be ready for harvest?
Generally a seed that is rated as Easy to grow requires little to no prep, is sown directly on the grow medium, requires only watering, and is ready to harvest within 7 days. The vast majority of seeds we carry fall into this category.
Seeds rated as Medium difficulty may need some prep (for example, soaking the seed prior to sowing), may require an extra step during the planting process (such as being covered by grow medium instead of just being sown on top), may need a little extra care (for example, the seed is mucilaginous so it gets sticky when wet), and may need more time to be ready for harvest (micro herbs are a good example).
Seeds rated as Difficult (there are very few) require some special or very specific techniques to grow successfully.
But don’t worry, we designed our program to make you successful. No matter what the Growing Difficulty rating of the seed is, we provide all our MicroFarm and SowKit customers with unlimited access to easy-to-follow, step-by-step Grow Guides, as well as support from our Gro Pros if and when you need it.
Yield means how much of the product you can expect to have after harvest. To help you calulcate your cost of growing microgreens as compared to the cost of purchasing them in a grocery store, we are using the weight measurement in grams to indicate yield.
In this context, yield is affected by multiple factors:
- microgreen variety (some are heavier or larger than others)
- seeding density
- growing conditions
- plant health
- time of harvest
The yield estimates provided are determined by the data we have collected from our own growing experience coupled with other professional and home growers in our network. Your actual yields may vary +/-
In our opinion a serving of microgreens is the minimum amount of microgreens you should incorporate into a meal to benefit from their health giving properties. But you don’t have to be shy, if you want to use more than one serving/meal go for it! In fact, we encourage it 👌
Our servings calculation is simple:
A Full tray (1020 size) will yield 8 servings of microgreens

A Half tray (1010 size) will yield 4 servings.

Depending on the microgreen variety you are growing the volume or weight of a serving will vary.
Occassionally seeds that are listed as an option for a SowKit are marked as “Out of Stock”. This is because seeds are a commodity and their abundance and availability depends on many factors including climate, transportation, and demand.
Occassionally a particular variety of seed may become temporarily unavailable. We will always let our customers know if that occurs.
